The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-time, Mark Haddon

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time starts with a moment of high drama. It is just before midnight. Wellington the dog is dead, a garden fork stuck in his side. Christopher Boone, the first person on the scene and a lover of Sherlock Holmes, is soon on the case, trying to find out who killed Wellington. Yet the case of the dead dog is soon overshadowed by a bigger problem: who is Christopher, and what is wrong with him?

He is a person with autism, who has difficulties with language and communication. He has difficulties with symbolic and imaginative play. And as Mark Haddon puts it:

“There is a very true sense in which there is something more wrong with people around Christopher than with him. Christopher has managed to restore order in his life. But the people around him, they are still struggling with huge problems.”

These problems include:
-Why don’t we say what we mean?
-Why do we so often make trivial remarks that mean nothing at all?
-Why do we tolerate such a confusion mixture of sensations of light, sound smell, touch and taste without screaming?
-Why do we have such complicated emotional relationships?

Christopher is simply troubled by such a world. It is too big, too desperate, to grasp and the feelings are even worse.

And the question arises: how to catch a star?
Once there was a boy and he loved stars very much … so he thought why not catch your own star, why not have one of your own.

Yes, why not have, he though I thought, we thought…

Skrivnostni primer ali Kdo je umoril psa

Skrivnosti…

“Also people think they’re not computers because they have feelings. But feelings are just having a picture on the screen in your head of what is going to happen tomorrow or next year, or what might have happened instead of what did happen, and if it is a happy picture they smile and if it is a sad picture they cry.”
